This paper focuses on the relationship between federal prison inmates who study at the college level and their mentors in the broader community. It describes in some detail the work together of one professor, serving as a mentor, and one inmate who has earned a BA degree and is close to completing an MA, all while incarcerated. Elements of the mentoring relationship are isolated and discussed. Questions are raised about prison policies regarding contact between inmates and members of the wider community. An argument is developed for increased involvement by citizens in the higher education of this small but significant population of prisoners. |
