In June 1984 the State University of New York (SUNY), College at New Paltz, initiated a master's degree program in sociology for some New York State maximum-security prisoners. The program envisioned furthering educational opportunities for incarcerated men who had completed their undergraduate degrees, as well as expanding opportunities for educating minority men. The accomplishments of the graduate program include conference presentations, journal publications, development of prison programs, formation of a College Library and Research Center, and postrelease success for various graduates. The program contributes to the academic community, the prison, the prisoners, and society itself.
