Inhoud: Recently, the activities of 'animal rights' organizations have influenced the ethical environment within which teachers of biology must operate. Despite the fact that the attitudes of pupils to the use of animals could form barriers to effective learning, little is known about children's opinions in this area. Here, we investigate the attitudes of children using a questionnaire containing statements to which children were asked to respond. In general terms, approximately three-quarters of the pupils surveyed objected to the use of animals for clothing, and over one-third disapproved of confinement of animals for human recreation in zoos. Most pupils objected to vivisection; about half to dissection. Although some two-thirds of pupils did not object to the use of animals for food, few thought that intensive rearing methods were justified. Perhaps surprisingly, only about half of the pupils indicated a positive attitude to the conservation of animals. Some differences in the responses of pupils of different ages and genders were found. In general, older pupils gave less 'sympathetic' responses to some statements than did younger pupils. Similarly, male pupils gave less 'sympathetic' responses than females. Factor analysis of the responses suggested that one idea underlying children's attitudes may be that children are not persuaded that the use of animals is necessary for various purposes.
