In this paper, the temporal evolution of surface thermal structures in the Alboran Sea, with the help of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) infrared images, is presented. We use 48 images, taken weekly during 1993, in conjunction with meteorological data. The relationship between those data and the existence, location, and size of the gyres in Alboran Sea is analysed. To eliminate short-time effects, twelve mean temperature images, one for each month, are obtained in order to evaluate the influence of the flow through the strait of Gibraltar in the above mentioned features of Alboran Sea gyres.
