Coastal features in Dakshina Kannada, southern Karnataka, have been studied using satellite images, aerial photographs and Survey of India toposheets. This study reveals that the shoreline is migratory in nature. The region is characterized by the presence of depositional features, like spits and beach ridges. Most of the estuaries and rivers behave in an unusual manner as they approach the coastline, taking a coast parallel attitude. Assuming that such features in the landward side are indicators of paleoshoreline, several paleoshorelines have been demarcated. Digital processing of satellite data has indicated the nature and distribution of suspended sediments and littoral currents.
