Tremendous efforts in both the study and practice of cellular manufacturing (CM) have taken place over the last three decades. Yet, most of that research effort has not been applied. The objective of this paper is to compare common research presumptions from the academic literature to the practice of CM. To conduct this comparison, the CM literature was reviewed and common presumptions identified. Then, 14 CM case sites were studied in depth to test the applicability of the presumptions. Of the 10 presumptions studied, six were disputed and guidance from CM practice is used to suggest future research. |
