Inhoud: A review has been undertaken of the literature on ranking procedures for environmental contaminants and on national, regional and local programs in North America for assessing and controlling airborne toxic chemicals. The objective of the review was to evaluate strategies for establishing priorities within programs to assess and regulate airborne contaminants. The characteristics of programs to address near-source and long-range impacts of toxic airborne chemicals are differentiated and discussed. Selected existing programs (national, state, provincial, regional and local) are compared and contrasted for the benefit of those agencies interested in developing an airborne toxic chemicals assessment or control program. Hazard assessment and risk analysis are promoted as tools for priority-setting within the overall control program. The desirability, at least for regulatory purposes, of maintaining the distinction between risk assessment and risk management is emphasized.
