Development of aquaculture and the environment: coastal conflicts, and giant clam farming as a case

Title: Development of aquaculture and the environment: coastal conflicts, and giant clam farming as a case
Author: Tisdell, Clem
Appeared in: International journal of environmental studies
Paging: Volume 39 (1991) nr. 1-2 pages 35-44
Year: 1991-11
Contents: The paper considers coastal land-use conflicts and the development of mariculture in Australia, compatibility or otherwise of global aquacultural development with conservation and environmental goals, and environmental consequences of giant clam farming as a case. The Brundtland Report favours the expansion of aquaculture, but takes insufficient account of the environmental consequences of such development. While the development of farming, including seafarming, can help to save farmed species from extinction, it is not without serious consequences for the natural environment and may well reduce overall biodiversity.
