Contents: Measurements of the output characteristics of a pulsed cold-cathode, two-electrode, electron cyclotron maser are presented. Short pulses, ~0·2μs, of W-band (75-110 GHz) millimetre radiation have been observed at power levels up to 0·3 MW. By varying the magnetic field over the range 2·2T to 4·2T the output frequency has been observed to be step-tunable in a manner consistent with the excitation of a series of cavity modes. The spatial pattern of the radiated output has been scanned to facilitate the identification of the modes of operation. Applications of this device to plasma diagnostics are discussed
