A natural measure of performance is defined for control systems. The input to the system is known to the extent that it belongs to a known function space. Lack of performance is then defined as the least upper bound of the absolute error that occurs over all time and all inputs. The main problems of computing a value of the controller parameter that satisfies prescribed performance are considered and useful expressions are derived for such computations. In particular, a simple formula is derived for calculating performance. The paper discusses the implications of the new measure of performance in control theory and design. |
