Contents: The problem dealt with in this paper is the design of a regulator for a discrete-time system. The regulator should impose a satisfactory dynamic behaviour on the overall control system and guarantee robust zero-error regulation for constant exogenous signals. The technique presented here is based on parameter optimization and, being very flexible, is particularly suited to cope with various constraints which may be imposed on the structure of the regulator (for example, decentralization of the overall regulation system and the order of the local devices). The design problem is stated first as an optimal control problem. Its reformulation as a mathematical programming problem is then presented, with some computational remarks. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is verified by two illustrative examples.
