Inhoud: Preliminary report on the rescue excavation at the site of Candi Bogang, Central Java The excavation at Candi Bogang, Selomerto (near Wonosobo), Central Java is one of a number of rescue excavations recently undertaken by the Kantor Suaka Peninggalan Sejarah dan Purbakala in Central Java and Yogy-akarta. The excavation, embarked upon after the discovery early in 1982 of the head of a large statue of Buddha, has to date been carried out in three phases, and has in part been used as a training excavation for archaeology students and technicians. This article includes a brief report on the finds and preliminary hypotheses about the nature of the site. The finds include a number of fragments of large statues identified as those of Buddha and the Bodhisattvas Vajrapani and Avalokiteśvara. All were unusually large, the head of the Buddha statue alone measuring more than a metre in height. A fragment of a much smaller terracotta relief of Ganeśa was also found. A number of stones were found which indicate that a structure formerly stood on the site. The absence of roofing stones, the presence of pillar bases, and the over-all dearth of “building stones at the site may indicate that the building was constructed partially of wood or other perishable materials. The rectangular foundation deposit pit beneath the floor of the structure contained six earthenware pots, within which were found coins, miniature implements of precious metal, and a number of small plates of bronze, tin, and gold. One of the gold plates “bears an inscription, apparently in Sanskrit, written in Old Javanese script. The attributes of the statues, their disposition within the structure, and their identity relate this group to that of Candi Mendut, near Borobudur. Like Mendut, this structure was seemingly oriented north-west-south-east. Given the obvious parallels between both the structures and the statues, it appears that Candi Bogang may date to within a few years of Candi Mendut, and was probably built slightly before the latter.
