In many respects, the Nixon administration, guided by political expediency, retreated from its initial commitment to environmental protection. While Nixon's record in wildlife management exhibits this concern for politics and a weakening commitment, it nevertheless constitutes one of the most significant periods in the history of American wildlife management. This paper analyzes the Nixon administration's record in regard to endangered species, predator control and other wildlife issues, concluding that while Nixon consistently acted on his own political behalf, slowly drifting away from his earlier advocacy, his record in the end remains one of significant accomplishment. Nixon's White House papers were the major primary source for this article. The article also relies on government reports, the correspondence and publications of environmental groups, oral histories, newspaper and journal articles, and the Congressional Record.
