As a political abolitionist, Frederick Douglass (1818?-1895) consistently struggled to balance his interests in the elimination of slavery with his broader concern for racial equality and human rights. Through the pages of the Douglass' Monthly, he presented a discourse, which attempted to reframe the debate over slavery. This discourse emphasized the discrepancy between the constitutional interpretation of democracy and American cultural practices. This essay explores the design of Douglass' rhetorical strategies used to advocate constitutional recognition of blacks. In particular, his strategic use of the Douglass' Monthly, for the purpose of convincing abolitionists to support his agenda is investigated. |
