"Primitive," "savage," "other": These are labels that have been used to refer to groups of people perceived to be outside defined boundaries, at the margins of acceptance. Historically, cultural Others have been the targets of description and interpretation by outsiders. But that circumstance has been changing recently as increasing numbers of Others are becoming the describers and interpreters of themselves. We wondered why and how this process occurred and we sought an explanation through (1) searching the history of the concept of Other; (2) examining the academic understanding of Other in three areas of study (gender, sexual orientation, and ethnicity); and (3) using an extended illustration, addressing the implications for the research process in intercultural communication studies.
