African Americans in Television News: From Description to Explanation

Title: African Americans in Television News: From Description to Explanation
Author: Gant, Camilla
Dimmick, John
Appeared in: Howard journal of communications
Paging: Volume 11 (2000) nr. 3 pages 189-205
Year: 2000-07-01
Contents: Since the 1970s , media analysts have documented disparities between the portrayal of African American television newsmakers and that of White American television newsmakers. Specifically, African Americans are reported to be underrepresented as television newsmakers and to appear in news story topics and roles that lack diversity. To date, research on African Americans in television news has been largely confined to content analyses, which have yielded suggestions for parity based on speculative explanations. However, this study bridges television news content analyses and decisionmaking research to explore the concept that the frequency and diversity of portrayals of African American television newsmakers are engendered in the television news decisionmaking process. The study takes issue with what is representative and offers suggestions about how television news decisionmakers as well as organizations that subsidize television news can bring parity to portrayals of African American television newsmakers.
