Floor-space use in Norwegian town centres

Titel: Floor-space use in Norwegian town centres
Auteur: Duun, Hans Petter
Verschenen in: Housing, theory and society
Paginering: Jaargang 3 (1986) nr. 1 pagina's 37-57
Jaar: 1986
Inhoud: Using floor-space data this article gives an empirical description of changes in Norwegian town centres during the 1970s. The changes are described with the help of total figures for the central zone and the transition zone, and density gradients to represent the floor-space use over distance within the central town area. The influence of new building and firm removal on the land use, functional content and image of the town centre is also described. The floor-space growth in Norwegian town centres has been greater than the growth of the population supporting it. The office and service sectors are undergoing particularly strong growth, whilst housing and industry are leaving the centre. There has been an increasing concentration of service functions and offices in the most centrally located blocks, but a simultaneous reduction in the number of firms. Town centres have become more characterized by high density and large single-function buildings.
