Year: 1986
Contents: This paper summarizes a clinical nursing research project conducted on an obstetrical unit in a tertiary level of care hospital in the southeastern United States. The research tested the effects of a deliberative nursing care approach with breastfeeding mothers and their babies. The essence of the approach is that the nurse consciously and consistently uses the nursing process when delivering patient care. The approach emphasizes the patient's individual uniqueness, assessment of the patient's needs, and validation as to the effectiveness of nursing actions in alleviating the patient's needs. A quasi-experimental design was used in the research. Data analysis revealed that the deliberative nursing care approach contributed more significantly to reducing maternal distress associated with breastfeeding than did the routine approach that was in use on the unit.
