Sources of support of elderly Acadian widows

Title: Sources of support of elderly Acadian widows
Author: Arseneault, Anne-Marie
Appeared in: Health care for women international
Paging: Volume 7 (1986) nr. 3 pages 203-219
Year: 1986
Contents: Sources of emotional, social and financial supports and services of 50 elderly urban Acadian widows were explored. The principal supporter was also interviewed. The widow's support network is very compact and most types of support are provided by children especially daughters. Financial and health problems affect social participation. Most widows state they have adjusted well to widowhood. The supporter and the widow have similarly evaluated the widow's adjustment to widowhood, her morale and health. However, the widows describe themselves as lonely three times more often than the principal supporter. For most supporters, assisting the widow does not cause major problems. Health professionals must evaluate the support networks of elderly widows and assist the supporters with social and psychological needs. Adequate income must be provided; social contacts and skills must be developed to foster autonomy for these widows.
