Studies have shown the effects of cigarette smoking on human health; it increases risks of coronary heart disease, lung cancer, emphysema, prenatal death, and spontaneous abortion. Reports showed that among health professionals, nurses have the highest rate of cigarette smoking. They have a much higher rate than women in the general population. Various factors were identified as possible causes of the increase in the habit. Nurses have expressed their desire to quit smoking in order to set exemplary roles of good health practice. However, inconsistency exists between their desire to stop smoking and their persistence of the habit. To effect behavioral change, personal health practices must be consistent with the desire to become role models of health. The purpose of this article is to review the historical background of cigarette smoking, the trends in the smoking habit among nurses, the physiologic effects of cigarette smoking, and the psychologic and social factors that influence nurses to smoke and to describe the implications of this behavior to the nursing profession.
