It has long been recognized that, in weakly dissipative systems characterized by waves riding on mean flow, a hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian approach can be usefully employed to analyze secondary motion as well as feedback on the mean flow itself. Renewed interest in the approach stems from the possible application to sub-grid scale turbulence (Holm, D.D., Fluctuation effects on 3D Lagrangian mean and Eulerian mean fluid motion, Physica D, 1999, 133, 215-269). In this article, we provide a unified derivation and presentation of the equations governing rotating magnetohydrodynamic convective flows relative to mixed Euler-Lagrange coordinates. Though many, but not all, of our results are already known, our unified approach is comprehensive and provides a firm basis upon which we build in the sequel to this study when the Lagrangian displacements are of small amplitude.
