Inhoud: Arcing graphite electrodes in formamide produce almost exclusively a series of polyynes without polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soot. Therefore, it is clear that the polyynes are derived from the vaporization of carbon vapour from the graphite electrodes because of the high temperature of the carbon arc. In these conditions, the polyynes are not converted into PAHs. This suggests that the source of PAHs and soot in the previous works with the submerged electric arc are derived essentially from the high temperature pyrolysis of the solvent under the arcing conditions. Only hydrogen-terminated polyyne chains have been detected from the arc in formamide. It is suggested that the hydrogen is supplied by a dimerization reaction of formamide into oxamide under the arcing conditions with the release of hydrogen. No cyanopolyynes were detected suggesting that formamide does not decompose into water and hydrogen cyanide.
