Today, military and industrial system designers face the requirements to select components for their systems that will survive in adverse nuclear environments. Military systems must survive the potential tactical strategic nuclear threats from terrorist factions, rebellious countries, and offensive nuclear super powers. Commercial systems must survive the natural spaceborne environment, the background radiation from nuclear contamination, and the nuclear-generated energy in power plants. These requirements have developed the need for researchers to test and evaluate fiber optic components to determine their vulnerability to these adverse nuclear effects and qualify them for production systems. |
