SUMMARY This paper reports research into the perceived effects of educational reform among secondary school teachers in England and Wales and Portugal. While the two countries have different education histories, as in most countries across the world teachers' lives and work are being affected by increased centralised interventions in the name of raising standards of achievement. In the case of England, interventions since the late 1980s have touched every facet of school government, curriculum and assessment, whereas in Portugal, this process did not begin until the late 1990s. The paper focuses upon teachers' experiences in these two communities, which are in different transition phases. By doing so it is possible, even within the different cultures, to identify common problems experienced by teachers within the reforms and their management which challenge existing identities, values and commitments and which are creating new forms of compliant professionalism. RESUME Cet article rapporte les effets de la reforme de l'education percus par les enseignants de l'ecole secondaire en Angleterre, au pays de Galles et au Portugal. Bien que chaque pays a eu une histoire qui lui est propre, la vie des enseignants et leur travail, un peu comme ce qui se passe dans d'autres pays, ont ete affectes par des interventions centrales au nom des standards. Dans le cas de l'Angleterre, les interventions depuis les annees 80 ont touche tous les volets de l'administration des ecoles, du curriculum et de l'evaluation, tandis qu'au Portugal ce processus a commence dans les annees 90. Cet article rapporte les experiences des enseignants dans les deux pays. Malgre les differentes cultures, on a identifie des problemes communs aux enseignants des deux pays notamment en ce qui concerne les questions de leur identite professionnelle, de leurs valeurs et de leur compromis en tant que professeurs conduisant a de nouvelles formes de professionnalisme. RESUMEN Este articulo reporta-se a los efectos de la reforma educativa percepcionada por lo profesorado de la ensenanza secundaria de Inglaterra, Pais de Gales y Portugal. Pesen los diferentes contextos historicos de los paises, el trabajo de lo profesorado hay venido a ser marcado por una creciente intervencien central en nombre de los standards. El articulo explora ademas las cuestiones relativas a la identidad profesional de lo profesorado y su profesionalismo docente decurrentes de las recientes alteraciones educativas y curriculares. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Dieser Artikel berichtet uber die von Sekundarschullehrern in England, Wales und Portugal wahrgenommenen Auswirkungen der Erziehungsreform auf ihr Leben und ihre Arbeit. In manchen Landern werden diese von zentralisierten Interventionen im Namen des Standards beeinflusst. Durch die Forschung uber die Lehrererfahrungen in unter schiedlichen gemeinschaften ist es moglich, gleiche Probleme zu identifizieren, besonders was die professionellen Identitaten, die Werte und das Engagement der Lehrer betrifft, indem sie neue Professionalismusarten schaffen. |
