The type (and only known) strain of Asteromonas propulsum Butcher has been examined by light and electron microscopy. On account of its internal features and its possession of 3 different layers of body scales, 2 different layers of flagellar scales and hair-like flagellar appendages, of characteristic Pyramimonas type, it is shown to belong to a complex of 3 closely related marine species of Pyramimonas, P. obovata Carter, P. orientalis Butcher and P. disomata Butcher. |
