The occurrence of intercalary 'Pilayella-type' plurilocular sporangia in culture is reported. The morphology of these sporangia is described and compared with the 'Ectocarpus-type' plurilocular reproductive structures already reported from field material. The taxonomic significance of the variation of plurilocular reproductive structures is discussed and compared with that reported for Pilayella littoralis (L.) Kjellm. It is concluded that further studies are necessary before the validity of the distinctions between the genera Bachelotia and Pilayella can be properly assessed. |
