The freshwater nannoplankton phytoflagellate Chrysococcus cordiformis Naumann (Chrysophyceae or Chrysomonadida) has been grown in unialgal culture and its fine structure investigated using direct shadowed preparations and sections. Noteworthy features are the thin unmineralised lorica, the eye-spot which is without pigment chambers (and therefore invisible by light microscopy), and the chloroplast which has a peripheral pyrenoidal area containing uniformly distributed sinuous thylakoids. |
