The fate of old girdle bands and the formation of new bands in the centric diatom Stephanodiscus are discussed. The use of scanning electron microscopy is a great aid in such studies since it enables observation of complete cells and determination of the position and overlap of girdle bands. It appears that both parent girdle bands are lost during cell division and two new bands formed around each daughter cell. |
