There has been a growing awareness of the strategic importance of materials science in France over the past ten years. Thus, in 1986 a survey of all training and research programmes in the field, not only clearly shows the great involvement of all engineering institutions, universities and research centres, but it also exemplifies the extreme variety of methods used in dealing with such a vast subject. While some 23 Ecoles d'Ingenieurs have a specific purpose in the study of materials, 22 doctoral programmes in materials science are available throughout the country. From 1975 to 1985, more than 2000 doctorate titles in materials science have been conferred, 15% of which to foreign students. |
