This paper reports research into the preconceptions of efficiency displayed by six primary school teachers, and the ways in which these became more scientific following in-service training. The participating teachers, none of whom were science specialists, readily acquired a scientific view of energy efficiency, even though this was virtually unknown to them before training. A key finding was that many of the views found before training were in fact expressing an understanding of energy conservation (in the sense of 'saving' or 'using less' energy). The evidence from the study is that ideas about energy efficiency (a scientific concept) need to be taught explicitly and distinguished from energy conservation (which, in the sense of using less energy, is a concept describing human action).
