Inhoud: This subject has been topical in France for several years. An updating plan called the 'Rouchette Plan' roused much spirited controversy before it ended in the form of ministerial instructions. What is the object of this plan? In what way does it differ from previous practice? 1 Oral work in school In the official instructions, which are called 'traditional', in the form in which they appear in a current compilation, 42 pages are devoted to the written language and a quarter of a page to the spoken language. It may be reckoned that four-fifths of the scholastic activity runs in the direction of the written language. Most pupils are silent. It has been ascertained from a large number of class records that 65 per cent of the talking time has been taken up by the teacher alone. The remaining 35 per cent is distributed among four or five pupils; 25 out of the 30 pupils say nothing.
