Inhoud: The Japanese EPA Turnpike Model is run to forecast the structure of the Japanese economy in the year 2000. Information on anticipated changes in production processes and labour demand structure was collected by interviewing experts, who represent the full range of Japanese industries, and used as assumptions for the changes in the technological parameters of the model. The growth rate of the Japanese economy up to the year 2000 is projected at 3-4%. It is predicted that the economy will experience considerable structural changes in both industrial production and the labour market. This economic growth is led by the machinery industries, electrical machinery in particular, in which intensive R&D activities are taking place. In addition, a large amount of job opportunities will be offered by the service sector. However, there will be a considerable excess supply of elderly and female workers.
