Evidence suggests that mathematics in school is seen as a precise tightly structured subject, composed of strict procedures for solving a limited number of specific problems. This results in an inability to apply mathematical concepts to real-life situations. One possible approach to this problem is the use of the calculator as a catalyst for change in the way in which mathematics is presented. By offering pupils the chance to explore mathematical ideas without the fear of failing, children were given confidence as risk takers, problem solvers and constructors of meaning. |
