Literature related to the use of computers with young children reveals a lack of objective information about the effects of the technology on learning. Much of the current information is based on subjective evaluations of personal experiences or on descriptive studies in which specific skills were taught through the use of computers. If significant contributions are to be made by the technology, a concerted effort must be made to objectively analyze the extant information and to focus on future investigations that might indicate those areas of the educational process most likely to benefit from technology. The purpose of this article is to provide an analysis of the current status of this approach in young child education and to present suggestions for future directions in research efforts. |
