Quality of life is one of the catch-phrases of current medical ethics. It fits nicely with autonomy and the move away from paternalism in medicine. Measuring quality of life in an objective a manner is very difficult. Yet if quality of life is to be a useful concept, some empirical data about it must be gathered. Data concerning how advance directives actually work are also important. Professional standards relating to these issues must rely on data as well as conceptual analysis. |
