This research project began as an assignment for an interdisciplinary honors course to incorporate three articles from professional journals into a dramatic presentation. Three articles on AIDS from Death Studies and other relevant journals were selected as the basis of the plot, each of which focused on caregivers' coping with a significant other's illness and impending death. The scene started as an improvisation that was eventually worked into a scripted scene approximately 15 minutes in length. Through the life of the characters, this scene depicted the various emotions felt by two gay men as their life together was relived through a conversation at the grave site. This project was an exercise in intertwining art and research so that research findings are conveyed in a medium intended to help viewers process professional understandings of AIDS at an emotional as well as an intellectual level. |
