This article covers a pivotal experience on my ever continuing pilgrimage toward discovering and creating the theory and practice of the natural high. Focus is given to Elisabeth Kubler Ross' transition from her courageous work with the dying patient to her dubious emphasis on spiritual entities at the expense of inner and interpersonal psychological growth. Her present position is regarded here as primarily cult making, inasmuch as charismatic leaders rather than growth principles are followed. Natural high theory and practice, on the other hand, does not dismiss either pole of the death paradox, but embraces its tragic side as well as its possibilities for the development of self-esteem, social interest, and the humorous attitude toward all of life, in this approach, leaders cooperate as equals in a teaching role, rather than as special characters with unique powers or objects of devotion.
