Arthur Zucker objects that I have wrongly insisted that people believe in the actual existence of anything they can talk about, and so the thesis that belief in an afterlife is based on talking about the dead rests on a false assumption. But my view in the article is not such a deterministic one, and I agree with Zucker that "language does no forcing." The ordinary way we can talk about the dead encourages but does not force us to credit the dead with reality. Other psychic and social factors would play a part in such a belief. |
