Current writings on death and dying are trichotomized into three major categories on the basis of how the knowledge was acquired: prescientific, quasi-scientific, and scientific. Various methods of knowledge acquisition within each category are discussed, and methodological problems unique to death and dying research are outlined. It is argued that, though research findings, no matter what their source, are valuable in constructing the larger, composite picture, all findings should not be treated as equally valid. Rather, some methods may be used to supply hypotheses and others to test them and still others to further validate the previous findings.
