On Saturday, November 9,1974 two experimental groups, working at Brookhaven and Stanford in the United States, announced the discovery of a new elementary particle, called J by the one group and ψ by the other. This discovery, followed by many others, raised waves of enthusiasm among particle physicists and gave Sam Ting and Burton Richter, the two group leaders, the 1976 Nobel Prize for Physics. Now, everybody knows that there were already at least one hundred entries in the Table of Elementary Particles. Why, then, all this excitement for some new ones? In this article I shall try to explain what was special with them, why they were expected and what they can tell us about the structure of the world.
