  Architectural acoustics

Titel: Architectural acoustics
Auteur: Taylor, C. A.
Verschenen in: Contemporary physics
Paginering: Jaargang 21 (1980) nr. 2 pagina's 139-158
Jaar: 1980-03-01
Inhoud: The physical principles involved in the transmission, absorption and reflection of sound are well understood. After discussing them briefly, the article goes on to describe the considerable complications that arise when attempts are made to apply them to the design of buildings. These complications stem, among other things, from the psycho-physical behaviour of the ear-brain systems of both performers and listeners, and from the multiplicity of uses that have to be considered for most buildings. Building materials and techniques of construction also present problems, especially when low cost is important. The article then deals with the techniques available for predicting acoustical properties in advance, and concludes with a discussion of ways of modifying the properties after a building is complete, including the possibility of electronic variation of the properties to suit different purposes.
