Inhoud: Low participation of women in computer science has been attributed to many factors. Perhaps the most significant of these, which has been identified in numerous studies of college students, is the difference in the educational environments that higher education provides for men and women. These differences in environments for men and women are particularly profound in male-dominated fields such as computer science. As a result, even women who are strong students lose confidence, lower their academic goals, and limit their career choices. In this article, we argue that including cooperative education (co-op) in an overall recruitment and retention effort can help improve the retention of women in computer science programs by directly counteracting those influences that diminish women's levels of self-esteem and self-confidence. The additional educational dimension afforded through co-op experiences can address the needs of female students not being addressed in the academic setting. The results of our own survey of computer science alumni who have participated in co-op reaffirms its positive impact. The survey results also suggest that there are gender differences in how male and female students perceive the benefits of co-op.
