This article begins by placing parallel computing, first within a hardware, then within a software perspective. Working on the premise that “hands-on” experience is essential to the learning process, the various laboratory options available to computer science educators in the field of parallel computing are identified. These amount to hardware support by way of (expensive) large-scale, commercially available parallel machines, small-scale (less expensive) demonstration hardware, to software simulators. Examples of the latter two options are described, based on experience at the University of Wollongong. These comprise coarse-grained multiprocessing using Multibus single-board computers, a hypercube simulator on the Sequent Balance minicomputer, matrix multiplication on the transputer, and broom balancing and pattern recognition on neural network simulators. Budget constraints will obviously determine which option(s) will be feasible for any specific educational institution at any point in time. This article concludes by making pertinent comments regarding this issue.
