Title: Properties of the balanced half-sample and jackknife variance estimation techniques in the linear case

Year: 1977
Contents: The balanced half-sample and jackknife techniques are most useful for estimating variances in large scale sample surveys. Considered in this paper are two balanced half-sample estimates and three jackknife estimates of the variance of [image omitted] , the estimated population mean. The particular situation considered is one in which the population is subdivided into L strata of known sizes or weights from which ni observations are selected. Theorems are presented which explicitly state the properties of these techniques when used for estimating the variance of an estimate which is a linear combination of the sample observations.
