We study the problem of model selection in Bayesian factor analysis. We propose a new model selection criterion for this model, which is to select that number of factors that maximizes the posterior probability for the number of factors. Equivalently, models with different numbers of factors can be compared by means of evaluating the posterior odds, or the log of the posterior odds, for pairs of models of particular interest. This procedure improves upon use of AJC (the AIC, or Akaike Information Criterion was proposed for models being estimated by maximum likelihood methods) and BIC (Bayesian Information Criterion). We use simulated numerical examples to illustrate the new methodology and to compare the results with these other procedures. |
