The issues in designing clinical trials for treatment of opiate dependence are discussed. In particular, the advantages and disadvantages of two sampling schemes viz., random time and fixed time sampling schemes used to collect urine samples are delineated. It is shown that a fixed time sampling scheme should be the sampling scheme of choice in clinical trials for treatment of opiate dependence. However, traditional opiate (drug) abuse treatment clinics, primarily operating in treatment (as opposed to research) environment may select the sampling scheme of their choice to evaluate the effectiveness of their programs. |
