Contents: In this paper, I discuss sample size planning for accelerated life tests in the linear regression model when there is type II censoring. Assuming the standard deviation around the regression line to be known, the criterion for optimal design is estimation of a given percentile of the life time distribution at the use stress under quadratic loss, subject to a sampling budget constraint. The optimal accelerated stress levels are determined at which observations are to be taken, as is the optimal degree of censoring at each accelerated stress level. Unit costs of observation at the various stress levels may differ. I show that the minimization problem reduces approximately to a well-known problem in optimal design. A numerical example is discussed.
