Interlaboratory comparison in the determination of nutrient concentrations of plant tissue

Titel: Interlaboratory comparison in the determination of nutrient concentrations of plant tissue
Auteur: Watson, M. E.

Jaar: 1981
Inhoud: Many laboratories are involved in the analysis of plant tissue to determine the concentration of nutrient elements in the tissue. The results from this kind of analysis are used to evaluate the nutrient status of crops. A collaborative study was conducted to find out how well the results from various plant analysis laboratories agree. This study involved several state laboratories of the North Central Region of the United States. Nine different plant samples were analyzed for their concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, and B. The laboratories used their methods and instruments that were routinely used to analyze grower's samples. The dissolution methods consisted of dry ashing and wet digestion. The determinations of N and K showed small variation while the determinations of B and Fe were the most variable. The determination of Mn was the least variable of all the elements measured. Atomic absorption spectrophotometers and emission spectrophotometers were pre-dominately used to measure the metals. The Kjeldahl procedure or a modification of it was the predominant procedure for measuring the N in the plant tissue.
