Greenhouse studies were conducted to measure the effect of pH and extractable Mn on plant growth when lime was applied to topsoil and/or subsoil. Plants growing in an acid topsoil with limed or unlimed subsoil contained high foliar concentrations of Mn and exhibited toxicity symptoms. When the topsoil was limed and the subsoil unlimed, foliar Mn was reduced to non-toxic concentrations, and plant height, plant weight, and root weight were significantly increased. Applying lime to the subsoil when the topsoil was unlimed reduced the NH4OAC-extractable Mn hut had very little effect on foliar Mn concentration, plant height, plant veight, and root weight. When topsoil was placed in the lower half of the container instead of subsoil, lime applied to either layer reduced foliar Mn concentration and increased plant height, plant weight, and root weight. It appears that when the topsoil is adequately limed, the Mn present in acid subsoils may not affect plant growth provided the plants obtain sufficient water.
