Biodegradation rates of 22 organic soil (Histosol) materials incubated for 39 days at 21°C were significantly correlated with acid phosphatase activities in the soils. Neither the bio-degradation rate as measured by aerobic soil respiration nor the acid phosphatase activity were significantly correlated with any of the 24 physical and chemical properties reported, such as the low P and metal contents of the soils. Acid phosphatase activity seems to represent the extracellular, degradative and accumulative soil enzymes which normally contribute to the decomposition of organic matter in some Histosols and forest litter. |
